Natural Sun Protection

The potential risks of conventional sun creams - the release of harmful compounds which could possibly cause skin cancer and premature ageing, according to a recent study by the University of California - are making a growing number of people turn to 'natural' sunscreens, which work by reflecting UV radiation off the skin like a mirror.

These past days have been idea to put some of our natural and organic sun creams to test. I used the Weleda SPF20 Edelweiss Sun Cream (£5.85). It contains Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (natural minerals), plus extracts of edelweiss (an Alpine flower that 'thrives under the intense mountain sun and protects against the effects of UV radiation'). This Weleda sun cream has a good texture, is not too greasy or cloying, and has a light, pleasant fragrance. If you want a more sophisticated organic sun protection for body, the Juice Beauty Body Lotion SPF20 smells divine with organic green apple and lemongrass extract and it is a fabulous body cream, too.

For my face is used Juice Beauty SPF30 Sheer Moisturiser (£24.95) because I wanted a higher SPF factor. The Juice Beauty cream offers antiageing organic ingredients and it does not give the ‘white’ look that some natural sun creams do. Finally the Lavera Sun Lip Balm SPF15 (£3.95) was perfect with organic jojoba it protects against UVA, UVB and UVC rays.

A wide choice of facial natural sun cream and body natural sun creams are available at Naturisimo The Organic Skincare Company.
